The Independent Candidate Advisory Network ICAN

Find out how to stand to represent your community in Australia as an Independant Candidate

The Independent Candidate's Advisory Network is not a political party. It has been founded by sitting Federal Independent MPs Peter Andren, Tony Windsor and Bob Katter to encourage independent candidates around Australia to take the giant step of running for state or federal parliament.

It is a giant step for independents. They might want to stand to represent their community, but are concerned at how to go about it, how to organise a campaign, how to develop the necessary support base to mount that campaign against the might and money of the party machine

ICAN, by offering resource material and personal contact with MPs who have successfully taken on the party machines to deliver truly independent representation, will help support genuine broad-based candidates to make the independent journey.

Gavin Priestley, former Telstra Countrywide Western NSW area manager, is volunteering his time to coordinate ICAN. Gavin believes the sale of Telstra is a major example of government ignoring the wishes of rural Australia. He has had no political affiliations, and wants to help attract more representatives into parliament who have one objective – to represent their constituency to the best of their ability, beholden to no-one except the electorate.

ICAN was launched in Canberra on October 11th 2005. Click here to see the press release issued on launch day.

2010 is now an election year, you can review and find all of the election candidates that are available for your electorate so that you can make an informed decision.

How to Vote Card

Posted August 4th, 2010

The how-to-vote cards shown in this section have one thing in common. They don’t direct preferences. This is the first rule of true independence.
There is no way a voter is going to believe a person’s claim to ‘true independence’ when the candidate directs preferences to anyone else, especially a major party. Such candidates can fairly [...]

Campaign Budget

Posted August 4th, 2010

You will need to have a very clear idea of how much you are prepared to spend on your campaign and where you will spend it.

Campaign Material

Posted August 4th, 2010

In addition to advertising in the media, which is dealt with in the media section of the Independent’s Toolbox, you will need some printed campaign material to help get your message across and raise your profile.
This can be anything from small flyers to deliver to each household in the electorate or hand out to people [...]

Booth Captains & Supporters

Posted August 4th, 2010

Your booth captains will be those strong supporters who are prepared to be responsible for a polling place, or booth, for you on Election Day. They will also be helpful in finding other volunteers and supporters to take a shift on a booth.
Your booth captain will in most cases also be your scrutineer. There are [...]
