By its very definition, independence allows individuals to adopt different strategies to achieve an objective – in this case becoming a Member of Parliament.
A true independent must not be beholden to any one interest group, ideology or organisation. So often the description ‘independent’ has been abused at a local, state and federal level, where ‘dummy’ or ’stooge’ candidates run as independents with the objective of delivering preferences to another candidate, usually from a major party.
